I would say that I was prepared for this class in some ways more than others. During my last year of high school my English teacher was very harsh on grading grammatical, punctual, and tense related errors. Then again, we were writing a lot of book reflections, so this did not very well prepare me for all of the analysis style writings that we are doing today. Needless to say, I have developed many new writing skills and procedures to put together more solid texts. For example, I now identify a target audience before I begin my writing. Knowing who you are writing to and who your argument relates to makes it a lot easier to connect with your audience in your writing. It is also important to establish a central claim in the text that you are analyzing, as well as exigencies and smaller arguments that support this central claim. Revising and editing is also a very important process to follow, after all there is normally room for improvement, whether it deals with clarity, structure, or grammatical errors. These are processes that I now follow in my writing, and these processes are beginning to become concrete due to their reoccurring use in this class. Along with these processes come strategies that I use in my writing. When writing an analysis it is crucial to point out the rhetorical situation as well as rhetorical tools the author is using such as ethos, pathos, and logos. For example, in my first project ethos was huge because I was discussing the affect that music has on advertising, and ethos was created by famous musicians promoting a product. Compare this to the way ethos was analyzed in my second project. This was an indirect use of ethos because I analyzed a book written by a very well known man (Al Gore) who did not use ethos in his book, but it is implied by a former presidential candidate being the author. Logos and pathos are also prominent in my former projects depending on the situation. I plan to ‘boot up’ other concepts aside from ones dealing with rhetoric, like establishing more solid exigency in the text I am analyzing and finding solid purpose in these arguments that I can connect back to the central claim. This will all in all give my writing more structure and credibility, making my message easier to follow and agree with. I am very passionate about music and fascinated with the industry. I would very much enjoy writing about changes in the music industry and how this can have an effect on our economy. This would relate to music lovers everywhere, and would surely be an interesting subject to read about.
