Perrin Atisha Annotated Bibliography:

Racism is a prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief. Some think that racism is not around anymore and we live in a country full of peace and harmony; these people are wrong and they are closed-minded. Racism is a major issue in America today and many people are being discriminated against for their race, color, religion, sex, and weight. Where does is the root of this racism? Where does it start? This starts in the home and that is one of the major points I will be focusing on, how racism begins in the home and how children are affected by what their parents do and say. Racism occurs in our homes, in our neighborhood grocery stores, and in the workplace. It’s everywhere and is destroying our lives and the welfare of humanity.

Science Daily speaks about depressed children due to discrimination. Dr. Pachter and his colleagues surveyed 277 minority children ages 9-18 years to determine the contexts in which they perceive racism and the relationship between discrimination, depression and self-esteem. This information may also be helpful in my thoughts about children, school, and home life.

Paul Connolly talks about racism in young peoples lives. He says that racism is not just a set of ideas about someone or something. It is more then that, it reaches into the very selves of individuals and influences their very thoughts and actions. He speaks about how children are affected and this is what a part of my paper is focusing on so it will help me greatly.

"Martin Luther King, Jr." Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia. Web. 23 Oct. 2011.

I will be focusing on Martin Luther King Jr. and how he was a true advocate to end racism and discrimination. He wasn’t afraid and wasn’t violent. He did his work with peace and love and Wikipedia shows this through stories of his life, sermons, and his death.

In Nixon’s entry, “All God’s Children” she speaks about how she grew up in the racist south and how she would see the racism of the African-Americans and she felt bad but her faith wasn’t strong enough to do anything. She began with writing plays about a white and black women becoming friends in the hospital. She realized this wasn’t enough and she had to get to the public so she created a television show on ABC called “All My Children.” She realized that in order to reach out to others and get them to see that racism is wrong is to show them that these different races aren’t all that bad. I believe I can use her article in showing that there are people out there who care and are trying their best but also showing that trying isn’t easy and it requires a lot of work. She uses an empathetic approach in her writing and this is what I like.

"Racism." Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia. Web. 23 Oct. 2011.

Wikipedia explains racism as the belief that inherent different traits in human racial groups justify discrimination. It goes on to give several definitions of racism and the types of racism. I will be using this mostly in my introduction and first paragraph explaining the essentials of racism.

The title caught my eye, America’s Original Sin, in the bible we constantly hear about the original sin being Adam and Eve’s sin in eating from the forbidden tree so I thought what could America’s original sin be? He talks about how all white people in the United States have benefited from the structure of racism, whether or not they have ever committed a racist act, uttered a racist word, or had a racist thought Just as surely as African Americans suffer in a white society because they are black, whites benefit because they are white. And if whites have profited from a racist structure, they must try to change it. This is interesting because as I said in my introduction, some people do not think they are racist but most white people are racist and have benefitted from it. He talks about how it is never too late to change and that is the point, change begins today, not tomorrow or the next day but TODAY.

"Watch The Program | A Class Divided | FRONTLINE | PBS." PBS: Public Broadcasting Service. Web. 23 Oct. 2011.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/etc/view.html

Jane Elliot divides her third grade class into two groups, the blue-eyed kids and the brown-eyed kids. The first day she tells the blue-eyed kids that they are better than the brown-eyed kids. The second day she tells the brown-eyed kids that they are better then the blue-eyed kids. She uses many techniques and learns that when these kids are told they are better than someone else they tend to treat the other group poorly and looks down on them and acts that they are truly better. I will use this because once again focusing on the children it shows that what they hear or what they are told sticks in their head and they will truly believe that they are superior to this other person or group.
